The reasoning behind first island chain makes sense to me, however why is the taiwan strait so important in terms of trading? Couldn‘t container vessels hypothetically just „circumvent“ Taiwan via the open pacific given the island is long and not wide? Or would this not be possible any more as China would project its power further into the pacific?
We'll discuss in later article potentially but there would be an economic cost involved in trying to circumvent especially for Japan who relies heavily on foreign energy imports, it also raises questions about security of the waters east, and south of Taiwan (island) as well. How can Japan be sure China will not project power further out?
